SUMMARY:Webinar: The Criminal Syndicate Within\, Inside the Madlanga Commission
DESCRIPTION:WEBINAR INVITATION \nThe Criminal Syndicate Within\nInside the Madlanga Commission \nDate: Tuesday\, 18 November 2025\nTime: 10:00 – 11:30 (SAST)\nPlatform: Microsoft Teams \n\nDear Colleagues\, \nSouth Africa’s criminal justice system faces unprecedented allegations of infiltration by sophisticated criminal syndicates into police\, judicial\, parliamentary\, political\, intelligence\, and law enforcement structures Corruption Watch. The Madlanga Commission hearings\, which commenced in September 2025\, have already produced shocking testimony that demands urgent attention from all stakeholders in governance\, law enforcement\, and civil society. \nWhat’s Been Revealed: \nCrime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo has detailed information about a sophisticated\, organised criminal syndicate labelled the “Big Five\,” with a Gauteng-based cartel allegedly involved in drug trafficking\, hijackings\, tender fraud\, and contract killings.  Recent testimony has exposed alleged links between top police officials and crime boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala\, including claims of monthly bribes of up to R1 million and contributions of R500\,000 toward political campaigns\, as reported by the Daily Maverick. \nWhat Makes This Critical: \nPresident Ramaphosa established this commission because these allegations\, if proven true\, threaten to undermine South Africans’ confidence in the South African Police Service’s ability to protect them and effectively fight crime and corruption. SUMMARY:Be Bold\, Be Brave\, don't blow the whistle on deaf ears

SUMMARY:When trusted employees are given the tools to commit fraud
DESCRIPTION:Case study: \nFor many years\, Medtronic International appeared to be a shining example of a law-abiding taxpayer in South Africa. However\, this facade was shattered when their accountant\, Ms. Hildegard Steenkamp\, exploited vulnerabilities in both SARS and Medtronic International’s accounting systems to carry out an astonishingly massive case of fraud. \nFrom June 2004 to May 2017\, Ms. Steenkamp stole an astounding total of R537\,236\,176 from Medtronic International. SUMMARY:Business E-mail compromise
DESCRIPTION:E-mail fraud is one of the fastest-growing types of cyber fraud in the world\, and while it has seen several variations over the years\, the type that is currently receiving the most attention is referred to as Business E-mail Compromise (BEC). BEC fraud is so common in South Africa that there is hardly any investigator that has not yet heard about this type of fraud\, or even potentially been asked to investigate this type of fraud. The questions we need to ask are about the extent of the problem and whether investigators really understand the crime and the criminal( s) behind it? \nWhile we have evidence from the cases that we work on in South Africa that the problem is bad\, there are no official statistics on BEC\, which means that we have no idea as to the actual number of victims or the total losses incurred in any year. This is not surprising considering that the CAS system used by the Sout Africa Police Service to register cases\, makes no actual provision to distinguish between BEC and other types of fraud. \nPresenter: Mr Jason Jordaan\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jason is a passionate digital forensics\, incident response\, eDiscovery and cybercrime investigation professional who strongly believes in finding the facts and solving problems\, that often have a very real human cost. He served for 18 years in law enforcement as a detective and digital forensics examiner\, before moving into the private sector\, which has allowed him to continue making a difference in a bigger operational area. In addition to actually doing the work\, he loves developing people that want to get into these fields and enjoy mentoring the next generation of forensic investigators. He is also an active academic and researcher in these disciplines and a published author in these disciplines.\n \n \n \nRegister\n

SUMMARY:The rise of the syndicate
DESCRIPTION:With International Fraud Week coming up\, CMS and the Institute for Commercial Forensic Practitioners have partnered to bring you a workshop on “The rise of the syndicate: a consideration of organised crime\, its impact on organisations and what organisations can do to fight back”. \nIn this session\, our speakers will consider: \n\nOrganised crime and its impact on organisations;\nKey risks organisations face in relation to\, amongst others\, business hijacking\, theft of intellectual property\, money laundering and cybercrime attacks;\nKey legislation aimed at tackling organised crime. In spite of the numerous risks organisations may face\, there are several legal processes that may assist organisations in fighting organised crime. These include the Anti-Dissipation Order\, Interdictory Relief and the Anton Pillar Order;\nWhether these processes are effective in securing evidence and/or assets as well as some common pitfalls to note when utilising these measures (such as urgency\, not making a proper case\, timing); and\nIssues relating to the employees acting in concert and knowing about a syndicate but not speaking up. These would include how to prevent a syndicate from planting a trojan horse in your organisation\, identifying and effectively dealing with the malicious / negligent employee.\n\nThis event will be held virtually and carries 2 CDP hours. \nRegister
