SUMMARY:IAFCI Financial Crime Summit 2026
DESCRIPTION:Collaboration Across Borders and Sectors\, The Evolving Face of Financial Crime in South Africa\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Collaboration Across Borders and Sectors\nThe Evolving Face of Financial Crime in South Africa \nSave the date and be part of an exclusive two-day seminar hosted by the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators (IAFCI) in partnership with Bowmans. \nSouth Africa stands at a critical point in the fight against financial crime. The threat landscape has matured rapidly\, fuelled by advances in digital technology\, the growth of organised criminal networks\, and increasingly sophisticated cross-border fraud schemes. Criminals now move with greater speed across jurisdictions\, conceal their activities through global payment rails\, and exploit gaps in both private and public sector coordination. \nThis session examines the shifting nature of financial crime in South Africa\, with particular focus on transnational money laundering\, cyber-enabled fraud\, identity theft\, insider threats\, crypto-asset exploitation\, and emerging scam ecosystems. It will explore how foreign crime syndicates\, local actors\, and digital collaboration platforms combine to create a complex environment in which traditional investigative approaches alone are no longer sufficient. \nCentral to South Africa’s success in responding to these threats is cooperation. The summit will highlight the crucial role of cross-sector partnerships between law enforcement\, regulatory bodies\, financial institutions\, cybersecurity experts\, and digital forensic investigators. It will consider how intelligence sharing\, joint disruption strategies\, and public-private cooperation enhance detection\, prevention\, and enforcement outcomes. \nDelegates will gain insight into key trends\, case studies\, and technology-driven investigative techniques. The session will discuss developments in asset tracing\, cryptocurrency investigations\, OSINT and threat intelligence\, incident response\, and the importance of aligned frameworks for evidence handling and prosecution. \nThe session aims to strengthen relationships across borders and industries\, reinforce a unified approach to tackling complex criminal networks\, and support South Africa’s position as a leader in financial crime prevention across the continent. Participants will leave with practical strategies to drive collaborative action\, reduce systemic vulnerabilities\, and build resilience in an increasingly interconnected world. \nWith over 650 specialist lawyers\, Bowmans draws on its unique knowledge of the business and socio-political environment in Africa to advise on a wide range of legal issues. Bowmans helps its clients to manage legal complexity and unlock opportunities in Africa. Its enviable track record of providing legal services to the highest professional standards on the continent\, spans corporate\, finance\, competition\, taxation\, employment\, technology and dispute resolution matters. \nEvent Details  \nDate: 28 May 2026 – 29 May 2026 \nVenue: Bowmans (Cape Town)\, 22 Bree St\, Cape Town City Centre\, Cape Town\, 8000 \nEvent Registration: www.quicket.co.za/events/347309-collaboration-across-borders-and-sectors-the-evolving-face-of-financial-crime-i/#/ \nPlease note that ICFP members qualify for member rates\, and they can claim CPD hours. \nInternational Association of Financial Crime Investigators (IAFCI)

SUMMARY:FROM SILENCE TO JUSTICE
DESCRIPTION:The ICFP has partnered with Stellenbosch University’s School of Public Leadership to honour Babita Deokaran. The Anti-Corruption Centre for Education and Research in the School of Public Leadership at Stellenbosch University\, together with the Deokaran Family and esteemed partners\, invites you to the Babita Deokaran Annual Lecture on Tuesday\, 9 December 2025\, from 10h00 – 16h00 SAST. This annual event honours her legacy of courage and integrity in public service and provides a platform for dialogue on ethical governance. \nThe Anti-Corruption Centre for Education and Research (ACCERUS) at Stellenbosch University’s School of Public Leadership is launching the Babita Deokaran Annual Lecture. This initiative marks four years since Babita’s assassination on 23 August 2021\, outside her Johannesburg home. At the time\, she was Acting CFO of the Gauteng Department of Health and a key witness in PPE procurement investigations. Her fearless exposure of corruption\, including halting over R850 million in suspicious payments at Tembisa Hospital\, made her a beacon of integrity. Despite her critical role\, she received no protection\, and her murder remains a chilling reminder of whistleblower vulnerability. Her courage earned national and international recognition\, including many awards. The Zondo Commission underscored systemic failures in whistleblower protection\, making this lecture both timely and necessary. It will honour Babita’s legacy\, amplify her message\, and call for stronger safeguards for truth-tellers. Supported by the Deokaran family\, the lecture will unite public\, private\, civil society\, and anti-corruption partners. Through this platform\, we affirm that South Africa must never silence voices committed to ethical governance. \nLink to the event – In-person Attendance:  https://forms.office.com/r/urgpZdFWV6 \nLink to the event – Online Connection: Register \nSee programme

SUMMARY:Webinar: The Criminal Syndicate Within\, Inside the Madlanga Commission
DESCRIPTION:WEBINAR INVITATION \nThe Criminal Syndicate Within\nInside the Madlanga Commission \nDate: Tuesday\, 18 November 2025\nTime: 10:00 – 11:30 (SAST)\nPlatform: Microsoft Teams \n\nDear Colleagues\, \nSouth Africa’s criminal justice system faces unprecedented allegations of infiltration by sophisticated criminal syndicates into police\, judicial\, parliamentary\, political\, intelligence\, and law enforcement structures Corruption Watch. The Madlanga Commission hearings\, which commenced in September 2025\, have already produced shocking testimony that demands urgent attention from all stakeholders in governance\, law enforcement\, and civil society. \nWhat’s Been Revealed: \nCrime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo has detailed information about a sophisticated\, organised criminal syndicate labelled the “Big Five\,” with a Gauteng-based cartel allegedly involved in drug trafficking\, hijackings\, tender fraud\, and contract killings.  Recent testimony has exposed alleged links between top police officials and crime boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala\, including claims of monthly bribes of up to R1 million and contributions of R500\,000 toward political campaigns\, as reported by the Daily Maverick. \nWhat Makes This Critical: \nPresident Ramaphosa established this commission because these allegations\, if proven true\, threaten to undermine South Africans’ confidence in the South African Police Service’s ability to protect them and effectively fight crime and corruption. DESCRIPTION:PANEL DISCUSSION: FROM FRAUD TO FREEDOM\nUnderstanding the Criminal Mind\, Prison Reality\, and the Path to Redemption \nDate: Monday\, 17 November 2025\nTime: 10:00–12:00 (SAST)\nPlatform: Microsoft Teams (link to follow upon registration) \n\nEvent Description: \nThe ICFP Gauteng Regional Committee is inviting you to join us for a powerful and unprecedented panel discussion that examines fraud and offender rehabilitation from three critical perspectives: lived experience\, professional practice\, and academic research. \nWhat to Expect: \nEstelle Burgers will share her deeply personal journey from a respected administrative professional and active church member to a convicted fraudster. In a candid conversation\, Estelle will reveal what led her to commit fraud and forgery\, how she executed the crimes that resulted in a 10-year sentence\, her transformative experiences during incarceration at Gqeberha Correctional Centre\, and the challenges of life after parole. This rare first-hand account offers invaluable insights into the mind of a white-collar offender. \nNomakhaya Siyotula\, a social worker with 26 years of experience\, including 21 years in the Department of Correctional Services\, will highlight the critical work of rehabilitating offenders while in prison. Drawing on her extensive experience working with sentenced males and females\, parolees\, and probationers\, Nomakhaya will discuss evidence-based rehabilitation strategies and the essential processes for successfully reintegrating offenders into communities after sentence to prevent recidivism. \nLerato Seshigwana\, a criminologist with a Master’s degree (cum laude) specialising in offender psychology and familial backgrounds\, will provide the academic perspective on criminal psychology. Lerato will unpack the theoretical frameworks that explain why people turn to crime\, the psychological profiles of offenders\, and what research tells us about effective intervention strategies. \nWho Should Attend: \n\nForensic practitioners and commercial investigators\nInternal auditors and compliance officers\nLegal professionals and prosecutors\nSocial workers and correctional services personnel\nRisk management professionals\nAcademics and students in criminology\, forensic studies\, and social work\nAnyone interested in understanding fraud\, rehabilitation\, and criminal justice reform\n\nThis is more than a discussion about fraud—it’s a conversation about human fallibility\, second chances\, and building a justice system that truly rehabilitates. \nRegister now

SUMMARY:ICFP & Experian : Cape Town Fraud Forum - Tackling Evolving Financial Crimes
DESCRIPTION:The ICFP and Experian are partnering to bring you an exclusive event focused on tackling the evolving landscape of financial crime. \nWe are excited to invite ICFP members to the upcoming Fraud Forum. \nAs the threat of opportunistic lone-wolf fraudsters persists\, the industrialisation of fraud presents an even greater risk. With the advent of fraud farms and Generative AI\, the goalposts for fraud prevention have shifted dramatically. \nFrom synthetic identities that evade traditional verification to deepfakes that subvert authentication\, the fraud landscape has changed forever. \nAs the scale and complexity of fraud threats develop\, businesses need to integrate fraud signals from multiple tools to mitigate these risks effectively. \nAt this event\, we will explore the key challenges and opportunities in the current environment and why the adoption of ML-based\, orchestrated fraud decisioning is no longer a choice but a necessity for businesses to stay ahead. \nBy combining different signals\, businesses can connect the dots from multiple fraud data points for a more accurate overall decision. \nJoin us as we discuss the latest insights from the Forrester Fraud Report 2025\, featuring a survey of 449 senior fraud leaders across eight countries\, including South Africa. This forum will bring together industry experts\, thought leaders and professionals to discuss innovative strategies and solutions to combat financial fraud. \nWe look forward to your participation in this important event\, which will take place in both Johannesburg and Cape Town in May. Please select your preferred location for in-person attendance. \nREGISTER for Cape Town \nAttendees will earn 3 CPDs \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
