Oh Shucks, its Cryptos! Foresight, Insight and Hindsight of Cryptocurrencies

The Gauteng Regional Committee is pleased to invite you to our upcoming development session focused on the “Oh Shucks, it’s Cryptos! Insight and Hindsight of Cryptocurrencies.” The session will take place on 30 June 2023, from 10:00 to 12:30 via Zoom.

The emergence of cryptocurrencies has revolutionized the financial landscape, offering new opportunities and challenges alike. South Africa, like many other countries, has experienced a surge in cryptocurrency-related crimes, necessitating a deeper understanding of the subject for forensic practitioners and law enforcement. This presentation aims to provide a comprehensive overview of cryptocurrency crimes in South Africa, along with essential investigation basics. The presentation will discuss the use cases for cryptocurrency and highlight past and current cases of cryptocurrency crimes in South Africa. It will delve into the modus operandi, including scams, ransomware, and money laundering, and will equip attendees with essential investigation basics necessary to combat cryptocurrency crimes effectively.

Presenters:

Chris leads the financial crime investigation team at Luno, a global cryptocurrency exchange with over 10 million customers in Africa, Europe, South East Asia and the US. His team is responsible for investigating and preventing crimes like money laundering, identity theft, scams, phishing and terrorist financing. Prior to joining Luno, Chris was a forensic analyst investigating fraud, corruption and other financial crime predominantly in the government sector. He is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) with over 10 years of experience and regularly consults and provides training to law enforcement, financial institutions and regulators on cryptocurrency investigations.
Brigadier Sewpersadh Nashrika is an experienced public sector employee who currently works at the South African Police Service. Brig was instrumental in developing the predictive policing capability model and built capacity to assist law enforcement on cyber security. She is appointed as an advisory panel member for cybersecurity at CSIR. She further developed a cybercrime product for stopping malware and ransomware on endpoint devices.
