Business E-mail compromise

November 17, 2022 @ 14:00 - 15:00

Free

E-mail fraud is one of the fastest-growing types of cyber fraud in the world, and while it has seen several variations over the years, the type that is currently receiving the most attention is referred to as Business E-mail Compromise (BEC). BEC fraud is so common in South Africa that there is hardly any investigator that has not yet heard about this type of fraud, or even potentially been asked to investigate this type of fraud. The questions we need to ask are about the extent of the problem and whether investigators really understand the crime and the criminal( s) behind it?

While we have evidence from the cases that we work on in South Africa that the problem is bad, there are no official statistics on BEC, which means that we have no idea as to the actual number of victims or the total losses incurred in any year. This is not surprising considering that the CAS system used by the Sout Africa Police Service to register cases, makes no actual provision to distinguish between BEC and other types of fraud.
